Anna Rún Tryggvadóttir Iceland, b. 1980

Biography

Anna Rún Tryggvadóttir (b. 1980, Reykjavík) is an Icelandic visual artist working across kinetic installations, material performances, photography, drawing, and film. Based between Reykjavík and Berlin, she creates environments where natural processes—such as the movement of salt, the life cycle of dying trees, or the shifting influence of earths magnetic field—are invited to unfold as active participants.

Her practice engages with the dynamic interplay between materials, mechanisms, and human presence, allowing raw elements to shape the work as much as the artist herself. These staged systems highlight the impermanence and interdependence of all things, encouraging repeated encounters that reveal gradual change and layered meaning.

By challenging traditional boundaries between artist and material, Tryggvadóttir constructs experiences that shift perception. Her installations offer a space to reconsider relations and relationships as systems of reciprocal support—not as observers, but as part of a shared and evolving system.

Her work has been presented at the National Gallery of Iceland, The Reykjavik Art Museum, Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, and internationally from Mexico City to Greenland. In 2021, she received the Guðmunda Art Prize, recognizing her significant contributions to the Icelandic art scene.
