Gudny Gudmundsdóttir Iceland, b. 1970

Biography

Guðný Guðmundsdóttir (b. 1970, Reykjavík) is an Icelandic visual artist based in Berlin. Her multidisciplinary practice spans drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, and photography, often weaving together themes of mythology, memory, and language. With a sensitivity to both materiality and symbolism, her works explore the layering of cultural narratives and personal histories, frequently integrating text and multilingual elements.

Guðmundsdóttir studied at the Icelandic College of Art and Crafts and later at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg, graduating in 2001. She has exhibited widely in Europe, with recent solo exhibitions at Overbeck-Gesellschaft in Lübeck and Hafnarborg – Centre of Culture and Fine Art in Iceland. An upcoming solo exhibition will open at Schwartzsche Villa in Berlin in autumn 2025.

Her work is held in numerous private and public collections, including those of the Icelandic state, Hafnarborg, and the Reykjavík Art Museum. She continues to be an active figure in both the Icelandic and German art scenes.
