Malcolm Green England, b. 1952

Biography

Malcolm Green is a visual artist, writer, translator, and publisher whose multifaceted career spans dance, publishing, and experimental art. He exhibited his first paintings and collages while at Reading University, and later studied at Nottingham, where he also began training in classical dance. His dance career took him to Austria and Germany, where he performed with experimental companies across Europe for over a decade.

In the 1980s, Green co-founded Atlas Press in London, a key publisher of historical avant-garde literature. This work brought him into close contact with influential artists such as Günter Brus, Hermann Nitsch, and Dieter Roth. In the mid-1990s, while living in Kathmandu, Green returned to visual art, developing a unique technique inspired by rickshaw decorations: reverse-hammered metal sheets, painted with high-gloss oil colours. This medium, combining text, image, and satire, became central to his practice.

His works, often oscillating between English and German, reference pop culture, wordplay, and philosophical musings. Notable series include Red Skelton’s Red Skeleton and Die Wursttage, which humorously explore language, absurdity, and cultural idioms. Green is also a member of the Dieter Roth Academy, and continues to live and work between the UK and Germany.
