Steingrímur Gauti Ingólfsson Iceland, b. 1986

Steingrímur Gauti (b. 1986, Reykjavík) is an Icelandic artist based in Reykjavík. He graduated with

a BA in Fine Art from the Iceland University of the Arts in 2015, including studies at Universität

der Künste Berlin.

Working primarily with painting, Ingólfsson has developed a process-led practice centred on the

relationship between intention, chance and material. Canvas and linen are folded, layered and

worked on the studio floor before being opened, cut, rotated and sewn into new configurations.

Fragments from earlier works frequently return in later paintings, allowing materials and images to

circulate through the studio over extended periods of time. His work is informed by an interest in

restraint, non-attachment and the possibility of allowing a finished painting to retain the openness

and immediacy of a sketch.

Recent solo exhibitions include Side Effects at Neskirkja, Reykjavík (2026), Break at Vinnustofa

Kjarval, Reykjavík (2025), Lingering Space at Listval, Reykjavík (2024), and Chop Wood, Carry

Water at Galerie Marguo, Paris (2024).

His works are held in private and public collections in Europe, the United States, and Asia.
