Björg Thorsteinsdóttir

Björg Þorsteinsdóttir (1940–2019) was a prolific Icelandic artist known for her work in painting, graphic arts, collage, photography, and watercolors. She pursued art education at various esteemed institutions, including the Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts, the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, Atelier 17 under S.W. Hayter, and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

Björg's artistic career spanned over five decades, during which she held over 30 solo exhibitions across Iceland, Norway and France, and participated in group exhibitions both locally and internationally. She was also a recipient of several prestigious awards, including a French government scholarship (1971–1973) and multiple artist grants throughout the 1970s and 1990s.

Over 400 works of Björg's are held in numerous public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Iceland, the Reykjavík Art Museum, and international institutions such as the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris and the Museo Nacional de Grabado Contemporáneo in Madrid. Her work was celebrated for its experimental nature, as she continuously sought out new techniques and materials, leaving behind a legacy that reflects her unwavering dedication to artistic exploration. She continued creating art until her death in 2019.
