Nacht: Anna Júlía Fridbjörnsdóttir
Nacht
Anna Júlia Friðbjörnsdóttir
Nacht is Anna Júlia Friðbjörnsdóttir’s second solo exhibition at Gallery Gudmundsdottir, presenting new works developed from the artist’s ongoing engagement with notation, repetition, and translation.
The exhibition is rooted in star maps and astronomical diagrams, which Friðbjörnsdóttir reworks through drawings and paper-based installations using carbon paper. These fragile, semi-transparent surfaces allow multiple layers of information to overlap, echoing the logic of celestial mapping while introducing moments of displacement and loss.
The title Nacht refers to the poem Nacht und Träume, and the works draw on its atmosphere of suspension and quiet attention. Rather than illustrating the poem, Friðbjörnsdóttir approaches it as a structural and temporal reference—one that informs the rhythm, density, and spacing of the works.
Installed as wall reliefs and spatial arrangements, the paper works operate between system and intuition, precision and fragility. The exhibition invites viewers to linger with these layered constellations, where orientation is offered but never fully resolved, and where meaning remains gently unstable.
