EXHIBITION: Malta Biennale 2026

Mathias Gramoso

Gallery Gudmundsdottir is pleased to announce the participation of Mathias Gramoso in the Malta Biennale 2026, presented in collaboration with sound artist Roman Gebhardt. The second edition of the Malta Biennale will take place from 11 March to 29 May 2026 across historic sites on the Maltese Islands.

Launched in 2024, the Malta Biennale quickly established itself as a distinctive international platform at the intersection of contemporary art and cultural heritage. With exhibitions presented in museums, fortifications, and historically significant locations, the Biennale transforms the Maltese Islands into a dynamic environment where contemporary artistic practices engage directly with layered historical contexts. The first edition brought together more than one hundred artists from thirty-five countries and received the distinguished patronage of UNESCO and the President of the Republic of Malta.

The 2026 edition is curated by internationally acclaimed curator Rosa Martinez and unfolds under the theme Clean | Clear | Cut, inviting artists to reflect on processes of clarification, separation, and transformation across social, political, and environmental landscapes.

For the Biennale, Mathias Gramoso collaborates with Berlin-based sound practitioner Roman Gebhardt. Their joint project brings together visual and sonic elements, reflecting the artists’ shared interest in perception, systems, and the interaction between natural and technological processes.

Mathias Gramoso is a French-Portuguese artist living between Berlin and Porto whose multidisciplinary practice explores perception and natural phenomena through installation, image, and spatial intervention. Roman Gebhardt is a Berlin-based sound-oriented practitioner working at the intersection of artificial intelligence, sound, and physical systems, and is co-founder of the music intelligence company Cyanite.

Presented within the historical fabric of Malta’s cultural heritage sites, the project situates their collaborative work within a dialogue between contemporary artistic experimentation and the layered histories of the Mediterranean region.
