Overview
Rhetorical Silence, Mathias Gramoso

There are forms of perception that emerge only when the world grows quiet. As familiar coordinates fall away, another landscape slowly reveals itself. Rhetorical Silence invites us into this unfolding.

For seven days and seven nights, artist Mathias Gramoso inhabits a spherical chamber where no light enters, no horizon appears, and familiar points of reference gradually dissolve. As the rhythms of ordinary perception recede, awareness settles elsewhere, following the subtle movements of thought, breath, and imagination.

At the centre of the exhibition stands the white fiberglass sphere, a form that has long embodied ideas of continuity, wholeness, and a world without privileged direction. Here, it becomes an architectural apparatus: a seamless interior without front or back, beginning or end, gently suspending the spatial cues through which the body ordinarily understands its surroundings. Within its uninterrupted surface, another relationship to space begins to emerge.

The performance precedes the exhibition. What remains are its exuviae, the material traces of a transformation. Like the shed skin of a snake, they bear witness to a passage from one state to another. Spoken reflections, acoustic and visual recordings, gestural drawings, handwritten notes, and the sphere itself carry the imprint of an experience that survives only through its residue.

Around the sphere stretches a visible network of cables, cameras, microphones, and recording systems. This exposed technological infrastructure forms an essential part of the work's architecture. The secluded interior is sustained by an elaborate apparatus of mediation, connection, and observation. Images emerge from a place where sight has fallen silent, holding intimacy and exposure in delicate balance.

Rhetorical Silence lingers between withdrawal and mediation, darkness and visibility, presence and trace, A generous, open-ended quest into the possibilities of the mind: a journey towards altered states of consciousness pursued through silence, darkness, attention, memory, and imagination. Mathias Gramoso turns inward, curious about what might become accessible when the mind is given the time and freedom to wander.
